Leapster Explorer Mr. Pencil Game Review
The Mr Pencil series is quite an innovative Leapfrog created game.
While other games for the Leapster Explorer may have big names to attract kids, this is one of Leapfrog's own in house designed games and so may not seem like the most likely choice to purchase kids but it has the potential to engage kids in ways that others cannot.
Gameplay
In Mr Pencil Saves Doodleberg, players must travel around the city of Doodleberg, fixing signs that were erased when a giant twister came through town.
Children need to draw and write their way around the town and tasks include recreating letters and numbers as well as art concepts like color combinations, scale and perspective drawing.
Mr Pencil is the main guide but he also brings in other friends when specific instruction is needed on art techniques.
There are a number of tools and templates kids can use to accent the art they create and while it is not Photoshop, the game produces some nice creations. Kids can also put their drawings together to create a flip book animation.
Its quite and inventive game and encourages creation more than other games in the Leapster Library and is recommended for ages 4-7.
Thankfully, the illustrations on the screen are reminiscent of children's drawings which is an important factor when trying to encourage kids to draw.
More complicated images may discourage reluctant artists from creating their own illustrations so these illustrations will make kids feel at ease.

As you play, you can earn badges for your achievements which can then be converted into LeapWorld tokens where you can customise your Mr Pencil game. Or use your tokens in LeapWorld where you can adopt a pet, play games and earn rewards.
With Leapster Explorer the game dynamically adjusts the curriculum to the player's skill level so it's not too easy and not too hard.
Parents can connect to the online LeapFrog Learning Path to see what their child is playing and learning, and explore ways to expand their child's learning journey.
