Leapster Explorer Penguins of Madagascar Game Review

by Inger on August 9, 2010

Penguins of Madagascar is a TV show that is itself a spin-off from the Madagascar animated movies from Dreamworks. The penguins have quite a following and the TV show is popular with both girls and boys owing to the rather slapstick sense of humor that pervades the show.

The crew from the films reappear in the show including the penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico; the lemurs King Julien (otherwise known as the “I Like To Move It, Move It” guy), Maurice and Mort; and Mason and Phil, the chimpanzees.

They are joined by a grumpy zookeeper Alice who is ever vigilant to their escapades, and a host of other animal characters.

Gameplay

The Penguins Of Madagascar game is one of the best selling titles in Leapfrog’s initial release of Leapster Explorer Games and focuses on addition, more than/less than, problem solving and animal facts.

Recommended for ages four to seven the player controls one of the penguins, Private, who has to complete four training missions and rescue a plush toy in each mission, hence the rather intriguing name of the game, Operation Plushy Rescue!

Like all of the Leapster games, The Penguins Of Madagascar teaches in a way that kids will barely notice, as they focus on completing their game objective.

Successfully completing puzzles and games (involving the Penguin’s karate skills) unlocks areas of the game where kids can learn more about animals and also earn tokens to use in the Leapworld online area or further customize the game.

There is a lot of jumping, sliding and avoiding the gaze of Zookeeper Alice so it is generally alot of fun while not being too challenging. The game also adjusts to your child’s learning curve so will make challenges easier or harder depending on their progress.

It is a charming game and you don’t need to be a fan of the series to appreciate the humor or the characters, unlike a game set in another world like Star Wars or Ben 10. I would recommend it to any child who shows interest in animals or mathematics.

Leapster Explorer Game:
The Penguins of Madagascar Operation Plushy Rescue

Skipper suspects Private is getting “soft”, so he has created four training missions, each with a different plush toy to rescue.  Rise to the challenge and sharpen your mathematics skills while Private hones his elite commando skills.

From HQ choose a mission, play games and solve puzzles to overcome obstacles and outsmart Zookeeper Alice.  Watch out for King Julien who’s on his own mission to cause mayhem!

Once you’ve restored order in the zoo, learn about endangered animals in Animal Fact Finder and unlock new animal fact cards for more learning fun.

As you play, you can earn badges for your achievements which can then be converted into LeapWorld tokens where you can customise your Penguins of Madagscar game.  Or use your tokens in LeapWorld where you can adopt a pet, play games and earn rewards.

With Leapster Explorer the game dynamically adjusts the curriculum to the player’s skill level so it’s not too easy and not too hard.

Parents can connect to the online LeapFrog Learning Path to see what their child is playing and learning, and explore ways to expand their child’s learning journey.
