Leapster Explorer Spongebob Squarepants Review

by Inger on August 30, 2010

Sandy Squirrel is missing. Kidnapped by the nefarious Master Udon, the karate master of Ninja Castle she needs a hero to step up.

Enter Spongebob Squarepants and his Fists of Foam, ready with karate and mathematics skills to defeat the evil Master Udon and rescue his friend.

Ok so that about sums up the game…

Sorry but it’s really hard to keep things serious when you are dealing with Spongebob Squarepants-master of irreverent humor.

Mathematics is Foam

(That was a play on words for Mathematics is Fun-this is why I write on the Internet and am not a scriptwriter for Nickelodeon. I’ll stop trying to be funny now)

The new Leapster Explorer game Spongebob Squarepants: Fists of Foam is a mathematics based game for ages 6+.

The Spongebob Leapster game uses the traditional scrolling platform game format to teach and test mathematics skills like more than/less than, fractions, geometry, place value, decimals and percentages.

The child plays as Spongebob Squarepants himself, who is also pretty handy in the art of Karate, and with trusty sidekick Patrick the Starfish foams his way through Master Udon’s minions, answering maths questions along the way.

Gameplay

Being a straight forward scrolling platform game its pretty fun. The game has a good mix of action and puzzles and comes with a fair dose of the requisite Spongebob irreverence (cue burp and bubble jokes).

There are five levels to traverse, from the Pier of Goo Lagoon to the Pirate Ship and through Port Town into the Kelp Forest. Each level is slightly harder than the last but the Leaspter adjusts itself to the child’s level.

Overall a great game if your child is remotely into Spongebob or slightly edgy humor.

Leapster Explorer Game:
SpongeBob SquarePants Fists of Foam

Barnacles!  Master Udon, the karate master of Ninja Castle has squirrel-napped SpongeBob’s good friend, Sandy Cheeks!  Aided by his pal Patrick, SpongeBob must battle his way through five side-scrolling worlds to rescue Sandy.

Each world is churning with Master Udon’s ninjas, a powerful boss at the end of each level and a sea of learning challenges!

Help SpongeBob gain power-ups and improve his karate skills by using your knowledge of geometry, fractions and place value.  It’s all in preparation for the ultimate showdown at Ninja Castle.

As you play, you can earn badges for your achievements which can then be converted into LeapWorld tokens where you can customize your SpongeBob game.  Or use your tokens in LeapWorld where you can adopt a pet, play games and earn rewards.

With Leapster Explorer the game dynamically adjusts the curriculum to the player’s skill level so it’s not too easy and not too hard.
